We may be a small metro, but we make a big impact in the world of pharmaceuticals. The Milken Institute ranked the Greenville, NC MSA as the #34 metro for pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing. This puts our MSA in the top 10% of all metros, regardless of size.
The East Carolina University (ECU) Department of Chemistry offers BS, BA. and MS degrees. The BS degree is certified by the American Chemical Society. Through its participation in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Biological Sciences, the Department of Chemistry offers a PhD with a Chemistry concentration.
In the ECU College of Engineering and Technology, a degree in Bioprocess Engineering includes the ECU engineering core, micro biology, and organic chemistry, complemented by bioprocessing topics such as fermentation, separation, plant design and bioprocess quality.
North Carolina Community Colleges are recognized nationally for their leadership in training and education that responds to the needs of industries in the state. BioNetwork, the specialized training program for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and life science industry, is an example. One of seven centers in NC, the Bioprocessing Center is hosted by Pitt Community College. The College also offers cleanroom maintenance training through the Industrial Systems Technology program.
In 2015, East Carolina University (ECU) partnered with Pitt Community College (PCC) to begin the development of a premier, laboratory-based education and training network for the pharmaceutical industry. With the support of a $1.75 million GoldenLeaf grant, ECU and PCC will establish the Biopharmaceutical Work Force Development and Manufacturing Center of Excellence. The two schools will work closely with companies including Patheon, Hospira, Mayne Pharma and others to ensure the development of technically skilled and creative students to support the region’s growing pharmaceutical cluster.
