Programs and Services at Vidant Medical Center

Emergency/Trauma Services:

  • Emergency Department (ED) – a 40,000-square-foot facility dedicated to state-of-the-art emergency care; 58 beds in two contiguous treatment areas; rooftop helicopter landing pad.
  • Children’s Emergency Department – Located next to the main ED, provides emergency care for patients ages 18 and under.  The facility is approximately 12,800 square feet with 16 exam/treatment rooms including two trauma bays.
  • Vidant Trauma Center – The region’s only Level 1 trauma center; includes emergency and critical care surgery, intensive care and rehabilitation services.
  • Vidant Medical Transport – Provides critical care and neonatal transport via a fleet of three helicopters and six critical care ground units.
  • Minor Emergency Department – An extension of the Vidant Medical Center ED for convenient, walk-in care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

Cardiac Services:

  • East Carolina Heart Institute at Vidant Medical Center – Diagnostic and interventional medical and surgical services. Minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic assisted procedures.
  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation – A rehabilitation/intervention program that employs exercise, diet and lifestyle changes.

Cancer Services:

  • Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center – Collaboration between Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University provides inpatient and outpatient cancer diagnostic and treatment services.
  • Gamma Knife® Center – Stereotactic radiosurgery for treating a range of conditions, including tumors that affect the brain.
  • Cyberknife Robotic Radiosurgery System – non-invasive alternative to surgery.
  • Cancer Care – Comprehensive cancer services including prevention, screening and early detection programs and services and support and survivorship programs.

Children’s Hospital:

  • James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital: 197 beds and bassinets equipped and staffed to handle any need from premature infants to high school students.
  • Care delivered in specialized units designed to be diversionary, decrease children’s anxiety, and keep families together.
  • Regional center for high-risk mothers and infants, offering a Level III neonatal intensive care unit and a pediatric intensive care unit.
  • Specialists in pediatric surgery, hematology/oncology, nephrology, neonatology, gastroenterology and hepatology, and nutrition.

Rehabilitation Services:

  • Rehabilitation Center – CARF-accredited programs for children and adults, with a 75-bed inpatient unit and a full complement of integrated inpatient and outpatient programs.
  • Primary Stroke Center – The only primary stroke center east of I-95, as certified by The Joint Commission.

Women’s Center:

  • Provides birthing rooms, traditional labor and delivery services, breastfeeding support, post-partum follow-up and educational programs.
  • Provides latest advances in gynecologic surgery.
  • Regional referral center for high-risk pregnancies.

Orthopedic Services:

  • Comprehensive services for diagnosing and treating orthopedic disorders and injuries.
  • Surgeons skilled in joint replacement, spine, and sports medicine surgery.
  • Post-operative rehabilitation for a variety of musculoskeletal injuries and traumatic injury treatment.

Weight-Loss Services:

  • Designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation on behalf of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
  • Pediatric healthy weight case management program.
  • OPTIFAST medical weight loss program.

Behavioral Health Services:

  • 52-bed unit offering inpatient psychiatric treatment of acute mental illnesses for adults, older adults, adults with medical issues and adults with intellectual disabilities.
  • Separate 5-bed acute case specialized unit for patients with severe psychiatric problems.  Only hospital in eastern North Carolina with this special unit.

Outpatient Services:

  • Vidant Pain Management Center – Evaluation and treatment services for patients with chronic pain. A collaborative effort of Vidant Medical Center, East Carolina Pain Consultants, and Carolina Rehab and Wellness Center.
  • East Carolina Endoscopy Center – Endoscopic procedures for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal conditions. A joint venture with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
  • Vidant Sleep Center – Diagnoses and treats disorders that interfere with natural sleep in adult and pediatric patients.
  • Vidant SurgiCenter – An accredited, 32,500 sf freestanding ambulatory surgery facility.  Serves patients who will recover and be ready to leave the center in fewer than 24 hours.
  • Vidant Wound Healing Center – Provides specialized care for a variety of chronic wounds, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
  • Vidant Home Health & Hospice – Provides health care for patients in the comfort of their homes, as well as care and support for terminally ill patients and their families.

Community Programs:

  • Community Care Plan of Eastern Carolina – A partnership involving hospitals, physicians, health departments, social agencies, and the Brody School of Medicine. Provides case management and coordination of care to Medicaid enrollees in the region.
  • Community Health Programs – Collaborative programs include Pitt Partners for Health, Pediatric Asthma Program, Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program, School Health Services and Senior Services Programs.
  • Lifeline® – Personal emergency response system.
  • Vidant Wellness Center – A 52,000-square-foot wellness center providing exercise, nutrition and weight-loss activities and programs to promote healthy lifestyles in adults and children, as well as aftercare programs for patients transitioning from the hospital or rehabilitation.
  • Vidant Wellness Center Nutrition and Weight-Loss Clinic – An outpatient nutrition clinic that provides medical nutrition therapy and weight management to adults and children and Optifast® medical weight loss to adults.
  • Vidant Corporate Health – Serves local business and industries with employee health services including wellness screenings, disease management, employee assistance counseling, occupational health, and work injury care.
